Real Season Begins!

Posted On April 11, 2008 10:11 AM By Phil in Flyers

Are you ready?

Some viewing tips for the uninitiated:

  • No meetings before 10 the day after a game, who knows how many overtimes it may go.
  • Put small children and pets in another room as startling, loud outbursts after goals/hits/penalties may cause severe trauma (unless they do the same thing, in which case, way to raise them right!).
  • Drink only Canadian beer until your team is elminated (ok, maybe you don't have to stop, ;)
  • Get HD. It's the only way to watch hockey anymore.
  • Listen to Linkin Park's "Bleed It Out" and "No More Sorrow" on a continuous loop all day so you are completely wired by gametime (or is that just me?).
  • Tell the wife you'll cuddle in July
  • Tell the wife its a playoff beard, send flowers once a week to make up for the complaints (no playoff goatees, that's so 90s)
  • In OT, make sure all your items are in order during intermission (beer, food, bathroom visits) because of no TV timeouts.
Add any others you might think of!

Good User Interface Idea

Posted On March 21, 2008 5:25 PM By Phil in General,ColdFusion

Today, I booked my registration for CFUnited, the hotel, and tickets for traveling to DC for CFUnited. The one thing I saw in each was something that I hadn't seen before, the ability to send a confirmation email to more than one address. I was able to send one to my personal and one to my work. Maybe I'm late to the party on this concept, but seriously, whoever decided that was a good paradigm in a user interface, kudos to you.

Restarting the User Group Manager Project

Posted On February 26, 2008 6:51 PM By Phil in Projects, User Group Manager,ColdFusion

I updated the User Group Manager project over at RIAForge. Things got so crazy with me last year as well as a few of the guys that were going to help me on it that it kinda fell by the wayside. I am going to essentially start from scratch and the only requirements to run it will be ColdFusion 8 and a database, initially to be MySQL, but others will follow. I'll figure out how much time I can put forth over the next few months (in other words, check with the wife on what house projects she has me lined up for) and come up with a rough time line for completing certain areas, which I'll publish here and on the project's blog. As always, thoughts and ideas are welcome!

Flex Builder 3 Requirements

Posted On February 26, 2008 3:46 PM By Phil in Flex,CFUG,ColdFusion

Our illustrious Philly CFUG leader, Steve Rittler posted a response to a member's question on the requirements for installing and using Flex Builder from a CF developer's perspective. It's a good overview of the minimal requirements. Check it out.

A Good Night!

Posted On February 26, 2008 1:12 PM By Phil in Flash,AIR,Flex,CFUG,ColdFusion

Last night, the 3 local Philly user groups threw a release party for Flex 3 and AIR 1.0. A big thanks to the guys at Independence Hall for hosting the event. IndyHall is a coworking organization that rents space in a building in Old City to those work work from home, telecommute or just want to get out of the stuff office.

The event itself was a good networking event with pizza, soda, and Red Bull for all. A short video of the AIR team was shown, narrated by Kevin Lynch. After that, a demo was down connecting the Wii remote with Flash, pretty cool stuff. After that, two copies of Flex Builder were given away, one version 2 with charting and the other version 3 Professional, many t-shirts (apparently Steve will be giving these away forever), and bunch of the eBoy AIR Launch Posters, of which I won one. Now the question is where to put it in the house

Anyways, thanks to all who made last night possible and I look forward to future meetings of the Flash, Flex, and ColdFusion user groups in Philly and some more cross group networking events!

OT: What happened to the Print Option?

Posted On February 25, 2008 12:23 PM By Phil in Rant

I have to ask this question of the blogging community in general:

What happend to the print option for blog entries?

Today, with the release of Flex 3 and AIR, there have been a ton of blog postings, some on just the thoughts of the author, while others have basic tutorials, the type of stuff one wants to read and try to get up to speed quickly on these released technologies. When I try some tutorial or article that I find online, I like to print out the article so I have it on the paper holder that sits next to my monitor. However, I have noticed over the past few months that a lot of articles or tutorials based within blogs do not have a "print" option (see the one in this entries byline) or a decent print-based CSS so the primary content is the only item printed.

Using jQuery

Posted On February 14, 2008 7:18 PM By Phil in JavaScript

I know, I must be late to the party, but today I got my first taste of using jQuery for an assignment at work. Nothing fancy, just some DOM manipulation for a form I'm working on. The reason I went with using a library versus doing a home grown code was the fact it was an internet form so more than one (ok, maybe two) browsers had to be supported. I liked the ease of the DOM stuff so I'm guessing the rest of what it offers (I know that's a ton more) should be good. Great, something else I need to put on my To-Do list to learn.

Posted On December 24, 2007 10:09 AM By Phil in CFUG,ColdFusion

I meant to do this last week but last-minute Christmas shopping, decorations, and feeling a little bit under the weather contributed to its delay. Anyways, here is a review of the December 18th meeting of the Philly CFUG meeting.
