USA! US ... THUD!

Posted On June 12, 2006 1:52 PM By Phil in Soccer

Yes, that noise you heard around 1:45 PM was the thud of U.S. soccer falling back to earth. After a quarterfinal run in 2002, U.S. soccer thought it'd make a step forward this year. Well, they still have a loooong way to go. The U.S. was outplayed, outperformed, and just overall beaten by the Czechs today 3-0. It wasn't even as close as that score indicates. Now, Saturday's game is a must win against Italy. Can you say 3 and done for the U.S.? Arena blew this game with his 5-4-1 alignment at the beginning and the U.S. never recoverred from the 4th minute goal. Things might have been different if Reyna's shot goes in off the post instead of across the goal-mouth, but that was one of only a handful of U.S. chances. Overall, a disappointing day for U.S. soccer and hopefully Saturday is much better.
