Oh Happy Day!

Posted On October 1, 2007 12:14 PM By Phil in Phillies

It took all 162 games, but the Phillies are the National League East champs!! After the last few years of coming so close to the playoffs and not making it, it feels kind of weird today. There is actually a playoff game at Citizens Bank Park on Wednesday! The last time the Phillies were in the playoffs, I was a senior in high school. To say this has bee a long time coming is an understatement. I also love how the media (outside of Philadelphia) is only talking about how the Mets collapsed. Please, the Mets' had pitching that was just a little less shaky than the Phillies all season and their lineup, while potent, was just a little less so than the Fightins'. What that equaled was two teams that should have been neck and neck all year, it just took the Phils 160 games to get even.

For every historic collapse, there must be a team applying pressure and doing amazing things themselves. It's not like the Phillies played .500 baseball, they went 13-4 over the last 17 games. They had 5 series left, one against the Mets, and needed to win all of them and probably sweep a few as well. Guess what, the did just that, starting with a sweep of the Mets. I guess the Mets didn't take care of them when they came into New York like David Wright said they would after the Phillies had swept 4 games from the Mets back at the end of August. I am not going to get too far ahead of myself as the Phillies face a tough road in the post-season. If Colorado makes it in, they will have been just as hot as Philly. If it's San Diego, they have an excellent pitching staff. No, what makes yesterday and today so good is that all of this surrounded the Mets. If this had happened with the Braves, Marlins or even another NL team for the wild card, I don't think it would have the extra joy and satisfaction it does. That's just my feeling. Maybe now that the Comcast Center has topped Liberty 1 the curse of Billy Penn has lifted? Who knows, but it is going to be a fun ride!
