Photograph to Line Sketch - Fireworks Style

Posted On March 9, 2007 12:26 PM By Phil in Fireworks

The other day, CommunityMX had an article on how to transform an photograph to a sketch using Photoshop. I liked the way the resulting drawing looked and thought of a few things I've been working on where a sketch would be good. The bad part, I don't have Photoshop, I only have Fireworks, so I went about trying to do the same thing with Fireworks 8. While some of the steps are simliar, some are completely different. Here is a summary of what I did:

  1. Open the image you wish to convert and save it as a .png file. You will see it open up with 3 layers: Web Layer, Layer 1 and background (at least mine did).
  2. Copy the bitmap image in the "background" layer and paste it in Layer 1
  3. With the image selected in Layer 1, choose Filters -> Other -> Find Edges
  4. With the image still selected, Choose Filters -> Alien Skin Splat LE -> Edges. Play with the values (note, the edge width doesn't go below 10). This gives a jagged edge to the outside of the picture. At this point I deleted the "background" layer since it showed throw the edging.
  5. When you are comfortable with that decision, choose Filters -> Adjust Colors -> Invert. Now the image begins to look like a pencil drawing.
  6. Next, choose Filters -> Adjust Color -> Hue/Saturation.
  7. Play with the 4 settings - Colorize, Hue, Saturation, and Lightness. The CMX tutorial has you enable Colorize and set Hue=+207, Saturation=+67, and Lightness=+5. These look good, but go ahead and play with what suits you.

That's all it takes. Below you'll see both images, before and after. Hope someone out there finds this useful and/or if you do it differently, please add to this post using the comments below.

Phil Duba's Gravatar I found this article as well: http://www.entheosweb.com/fireworks/pencil_drawing.... You still have to invert it, at least I did on the picture used here, but it is a few less steps and the image looks just as good.
