Philly and MLS

Posted On August 16, 2007 12:15 PM By Phil in Soccer

Last year I blogged about MLS possibly putting a franchise in the Philly area and being housed in a new complex in South Jersey. While that project hasn't gone anywhere, apparently the city of Chester is looking at hosting the Philly area team, if one is awarded. I'm sorry, but this is a big mistake. I, for one, won't drive down into Chester for any reason, other than to get to the Commodore Barry Bridge. This includes the supposedly thriving slot parlor.

Now, if you want a good solution for an MLS team in Philly, get Comcast and Comcast-Spectacor involved. While they don't need to be principle owner, they have the most experience in running a soccer team, and sports teams in general, in the area. They owned/operated the WUSA's Philadelphia Charge which played out in Villanova. Pick the old incinerator site along the Delaware River which was one of the finalists for the Phillies new stadium site. Center the whole riverfront development theme around it. Allow it to seat between 30 to 40,000. Allow it to host concerts. There's nothing I can't stand more than seeing the Linc get unused all summer long. Ultimately, I think the stadium needs to be in Philly itself as soccer is popular in the communities that surround the city, the entire area, and a stadium located anywhere but the center of the area will ultimately limit the access to the site.
