OT: College Football Games Are Too Long

Posted On September 4, 2007 7:39 AM By Phil in Navy Football,College Football

I love college football. I love the pageantry, the spectacle of game day, and the pure enthusiasm of the players and fans. For as long as I can remember, I have loved watching it, more so than the NFL. But now, these games are taking close to four hours. I know they tried to speed up the games last year with rules that were pretty dumb, but at least it did speed up the games somewhat. ESPN gives the game a 3 hour slot time, followed by a half-hour scoreboard show and then another 3 hour slot time. The scoreboard show was never shown on Saturday because the games went over by a ton.

Ok, so here is what I would do to speed up the game:

  • Clock starts unless in the final 5 minutes of the 2nd half for when someone goes out of bounds.
  • TV/Radio is limited to 3 commercial breaks per quarter not including the end of the quarter, non-30 second timeouts, and injuries. The NCAA has this rule in basketball, time to put it in for football.
  • The 25 second play clock becomes a 40 second play clock after an incomplete pass that starts as soon as the ball hits the ground, just like the NFL (only 5 seconds longer).

It takes almost a minute to reset and start the play clock in today's college game. This is probably the biggest reason for the longer games. The infusion of the spread offense and its propensity to pass the ball upwards of 70% of the time, has resulted in longer games due to these incompletions. A play clock that starts immediately after the incompletion has been signaled will force the next play to be called quicker and force these slow referees to spot the ball quicker. Nothing irritates me more in the college game than the almost lethargic pace at which the refs spot the ball. Even a little more urgency on their part would create shorter games. Again, just my opinion, but something has to be done otherwise the college game is going to lose its TV audience.

Brian Rinaldi's Gravatar I love CFB too but let me tell you, you can feel the pain of the TV time-outs when you are at the game. I was at BC vs Wake Forest this weekend and sometimes it felt like there was a TV time out after every single change of possession. Needless to say this was a real momentum killer. At one point BC intercepts in the end zone, the crowd goes crazy, the players are hyped...TV timeout. That is just wrong.

Phil's Gravatar @Brian, I absolutely agree. I am somewhat dreading my trips to Annapolis this year for my Navy games. At least they run the option, so that should cut down on the stoppages for incompletions.
