OT: What happened to the Print Option?
Posted On February 25, 2008 12:23 PM By Phil in Rant
I have to ask this question of the blogging community in general:
What happend to the print option for blog entries?
Today, with the release of Flex 3 and AIR, there have been a ton of blog postings, some on just the thoughts of the author, while others have basic tutorials, the type of stuff one wants to read and try to get up to speed quickly on these released technologies. When I try some tutorial or article that I find online, I like to print out the article so I have it on the paper holder that sits next to my monitor. However, I have noticed over the past few months that a lot of articles or tutorials based within blogs do not have a "print" option (see the one in this entries byline) or a decent print-based CSS so the primary content is the only item printed.
From a usability perspective, this type of functionality is key to a good site visit. I'm not sure if author's think that everyone reading browsing their site has super huge monitors or dual monitor setups, but regardless, sometimes paper copies is better for transport or working on the topic during a commute. I remember when Adobe's (it may have been Macromedia's, not sure) site changed the way their articles appeared and did not have a "Print" option or style sheet. I submitted feedback using their option and asked the question about the printing. They responded in about 20 minutes saying it was priority 1 on their list and within a few days, a print option was up and running. So to all the bloggers out there, if your blogging software contains the ability to provide a print link or print CSS option, please enable it so your readers can have hard copies that make trying to enact the topic at hand easier.
There, I feel better now. :)
