DIY: Installing Kitchen Counter - Sink Cutout

Posted On August 31, 2007 6:38 AM By Phil in House,DIY

Since I got back from my honeymoon, it's been pretty much none stop house work (note: this is what happens when wifey teaches and has all day to think about what should be done around the house). The main item on the agenda was the installation of new laminate countertops. There were two primary concerns when installing these:

  1. Due to the custom nature of the laminate countertops we ordered, the backsplashes were not installed.
  2. Cutting out the hole for the sink
I figure I'll talk about the backsplashes later, once the countertop is finally installed, but the sink cutout was by far harder.

Jim Priest's Gravatar I carry a light and dark grease pencil in my toolbox for marking on odd surfaces... Works great and easy to wipe off afterwards.

Phil's Gravatar @Jim: Yeah, I need to invest in some of those. I had a similar issue cutting treated wood for my shed floor (another post for another day).

Bash's Gravatar You could also cover the area with masking tape and draw the lines on that.

James's Gravatar I put in laminates in my kitchen 12 years ago and now they are scratched and bubbled in places. They were good at the time because they fit my budget back then, but now I'm looking for something that holds up better. I found a guide for choosing kitchen countertops at http://www.kitchen-counter-tops.net that helped a lot and I think I might go with soapstone, but that would pretty much eliminate the option of doing it myself since one mistake would be very costly!
