Yesterday was Framework Release Day!

Yesterday there were a number of releases of frameworks for ColdFusion. Joe Rinehart released Model Glue 2.0 - Beta 1. Also, Sean Corfield released Fusebox 5 Beta 2 to the Fusebox Yahoo! group.

Model-Glue:Unity Preview

Joe Rinehart has a preview video of Model-Glue:Unity over on his blog. I like what I've seen so far in the two quick glimpsed of Unity, I just don't know if I can utilize it to the fullest extent with Reactor due to the way I generally use common model/view items across various customers. I can't wait to start playing around with it, though.

Model-Glue Unity Preview

I couldn't catch it live, so last night I watched Joe Rinehart's presentation on model glue to the Portland CFUG. Joe gives a great overview of Model-Glue but the last 25-30 minutes is where I drooled the most. Joe previewed Unity, coming with version 2.0. Unity integrates Model-Glue with two other frameworks which help increase developer productivity: Reactor and ColdSpring. The premise the ability to create the base structure of an application manipulating these frameworks 3 configuration files. That might be the only drawback, having to work with 3 different configuration files. Other than that, it looks sweet. I've just started getting deeper into Reactor, so I'm even more inclined to learn more about it now. Now, if we could only get Fusebox to do the same ...

Coldspring is Release Candidate!!!

ColdSpring has reached RC1! For those that don't know, ColdSpring is a framework for CFCs (ColdFusion Components). ColdSpring's core focus is to make the configuration and dependencies of your CFCs easier to manage. ColdSpring uses the "inversion-of-control" pattern to "wire" your CFCs together. It is based off of the Spring framework for Java. I have two applications I'm developing that use ColdSpring as well as the Philly CFUG site that use ColdSpring. I guess I'll upgrade its code over the weekend and test it out.

Welcome and PACFUG Meeting!

This is officially my first blog posting! Now, I am at least up to 2004 communication wise! I wanted to try and get my site up by the Flyers' first home game, but since that didn't work out, I "revised" the goal to be the first Philadelphia Area ColdFusion User Group meeting which was held yesterday. I was pleased with the number of people there. The last few meetings have had relatively few people in attendance, so seeing all the chairs filled at Brookwood Media Arts last night was great. First, I didn't get to see Steve's presentation as I was stuck on the turnpike due to some traffic issues. In trying to get around it, I took a tour of the Welsh Rd. traffic nightmare. I Should have stayed on the turnpike. Anyway, I got in at the end of his presentation on Dreamweaver 8 and other IDEs while he was showing CFEclipse. I've tried using CFEclipse. Maybe I have used Homesite/CF Studio and Dreamweaver so much that I just don't get it and its layout or its Java-type usage of packages/projects/whatever they are called. Can't wait for Steve's presentation on Dreamweaver to be uploaded to see what tidbits he's found for us coders.

The second presentation given by Matt Cass also from Steve's company, CounterMarch Systems, was on CFAJAX. CFAJAX is a way to communicate through JavaScript and a core file to a server technology, thus refreshing data without refreshing the web page. This is pretty cool, except for the using JavaScript part. I think it has potential but, as Matt pointed out, there is little documentation as well as security concerns with the use of components. Steve also talked in his blog about double controllers for those of us who utilize Mach-ii or Fusebox or ModelGlue as CFAJAX has its own. The rest of the meeting was spent on talking about architectures/methodologies/frameworks and how it appears that the community has gotten behind the idea of using some sort of framework. There also appears to be a flux of programming jobs becoming available for CF developers, including two positions listed for the place where I work, VirtualEdge.

That's all for now and hopefully I can keep up blogging. Next up, I've downloaded the Flex2 Alpha and can't wait to start looking and playing with it to see where that product is going.
