Oh Happy Day! - Part 2
Posted On October 1, 2007 12:48 PM By Phil in Navy Football,College Football
While I posted an entry on why today was a happy day for one reason, it is for another. On Saturday, I got to witness for the 5th straight year, Navy's football team defeat Air Force and gain the inside track on the Commander-In-Chief's trophy. It was a close game, but Navy pulled away in the 4th quarter. Army/Navy is the rivalry that gets all the headlines, but I think Navy(or Army)/Air Force is the more heated and intense. A few of the Navy players agreed, saying last week playing Army was like playing against your brother, you want to win but there is respect. Playing against AF, you just want to win no matter what. It probably has to do with a "elitist" type attitude prevalent at Army and Navy and AF is that country club out west, also the fact that AF has won a lot more in football than either school since its inception. On the other hand, I couldn't believe some of the quotes from the coach and players from AF leading up to the game, about how Navy was just another team on the schedule and that there was less emphasis on the CIC trophy. Yeah, right. Rivals are Rivals, trophy games are trophy games, and they all mean more than conference games.
OT: College Football Games Are Too Long
Posted On September 4, 2007 7:39 AM By Phil in Navy Football,College Football
I love college football. I love the pageantry, the spectacle of game day, and the pure enthusiasm of the players and fans. For as long as I can remember, I have loved watching it, more so than the NFL. But now, these games are taking close to four hours. I know they tried to speed up the games last year with rules that were pretty dumb, but at least it did speed up the games somewhat. ESPN gives the game a 3 hour slot time, followed by a half-hour scoreboard show and then another 3 hour slot time. The scoreboard show was never shown on Saturday because the games went over by a ton.
GO NAVY, BEAT ARMY!!!
Posted On December 2, 2005 7:42 AM By Phil in Navy Football
It's cold, it's windy, so it must time for the Army/Navy game. For the first time since I was a junior at Navy, the Commander-in-Chiefs trophy is up for grabs tomorrow. Hopefully this year's game turns out a lot better than that one. If you are a football fan, you need to get to this game once in your life, it is the best rivalry in all of sports. While it may not be for the national championship or major bowl invites like it was in the mid-1900s, it is still THE game on the schedule for the players and students of each school. The first thing I was told to say at Navy was Beat Army and its vice-versa for the whoops, er, cadets. There's no more pagentray in a college game than that on display during this one with each student body marching onto the field (well, at Navy we kind-of stroll) then filling 8,000+ seats at the stadium, separated by about 2-3 sections. When it's all over, both teams stand side-by-side during the alma-maters. Hopefully this year, like the last 3, Navy's is played last. GO NAVY, BEAT ARMY!!
USAFA Coach's comments
Posted On October 26, 2005 4:18 PM By Phil in Navy Football
Zoomie coach Fisher DeBerry made comments regarding his team's lack of speed that, at the very least, are racially insensitive, and at most rank up there with those statements made by Howard Cossell and Jimmy the Greek. Without question, he should resign from his post. This incident is his second in about a year. The first is the fact he had a banner in his teams locker which stated "I am a Christian first and last. ... I am a member of Team Jesus Christ." There is more unrest at the Hotel Colorado Springs as religious intolerance has become the crisis of the moment there following sexual harassment and alleged rape incidents from the past few years.
As for football, Air Force has traditionally been in the top 3-4 teams in its conference and almost guaranteed a bowl game. Now, with scholarship limitations, I think AF is seeing its conference become better because kids from the Rocky Mountain states aren't going to school out of state anymore, they're staying at CSU, Wyoming, Utah, BYU, etc. The level of talent DeBerry was recruiting used to be good enough to compete in the WAC/MWC but not anymore. They must look at how they recruit and who they recruit. They had a tremendous linebacker a few years ago that was named captain as a sophomore and he transferred to Ohio State after that season.
First, they've seen Navy take away what they believe is their CIC trophy each of the last 3 years and now, they see the rest of the conference passing them. It boils down to recruiting talent and if he hasn't recruited the talent he needs, that's his fault, not the fact a team has more of this type of player or that type of player, or has more diversity than his team. As a leader and teacher of men and women (I'm assuming there are some associated with the football team in some manner), DeBerry has to be held accountable for making these types of remarks not once but twice within two days with his termination, plain and simple.
