Oh Happy Day!

It took all 162 games, but the Phillies are the National League East champs!! After the last few years of coming so close to the playoffs and not making it, it feels kind of weird today. There is actually a playoff game at Citizens Bank Park on Wednesday! The last time the Phillies were in the playoffs, I was a senior in high school. To say this has bee a long time coming is an understatement. I also love how the media (outside of Philadelphia) is only talking about how the Mets collapsed. Please, the Mets' had pitching that was just a little less shaky than the Phillies all season and their lineup, while potent, was just a little less so than the Fightins'. What that equaled was two teams that should have been neck and neck all year, it just took the Phils 160 games to get even.

OT: Phillies and Foul Poles

For many Phillies fans, last night was the end of the season. The Phils essentially have to win out to get into the playoffs and it all changed on one play last night, Chase Utley's foul ball that wasn't. Watching the game live, it looked foul from the camera angle during game action. On the replay, however, it is clear it was a home run. I don't blame Phil's manager Charlie Manuel for not arguing as you can barely see first base from the dugout in that stadium. I'm 50/50 on Chase Utley not seeing where the ball went. Yes, he is running the bases, but part of that is seeing where the ball is to see whether you can get to second or not. I blame more the first base and thrid base coaches. Both of them should have been following the ball, and defintely the first base coach, and should have seen it hit the pole. It would have put the Phillies up 5-0, I think, and most likely have chased the starter from the game as the Nats had bullpen action going on in previous innings. Here's a better question though: why is baseball still using poles? I say, all Foul Poles should be nets. I don't care if this changes the aesthetics of places like Fenway or Wrigley, who cares. If it goes in the net, it's a home run. It's time baseball moved into the 21st century and mandates the changin of all poles to nets for next season.
