Philly CFUG Notes - Adam Lehman on CF8, Flex and BlazeDS

Last Thursday, Adam Lehman, Product Evangelist for Adobe, came to speak to the Philly CFUG about Flex, ColdFusion, and BlazeDS. I'll be honest, I still don't get the BlazeDS product and/or it's uses. This confusion could be from the fact I don't use Flex everyday and don't have a real paradigm I can relate the uses of the various LiveCycle products to. Anyways, Adam did show a few slides that show the differences between the products. What follows are my notes on the presentation itself.

Last night, the 3 local Philly user groups threw a release party for Flex 3 and AIR 1.0. A big thanks to the guys at Independence Hall for hosting the event. IndyHall is a coworking organization that rents space in a building in Old City to those work work from home, telecommute or just want to get out of the stuff office.

The event itself was a good networking event with pizza, soda, and Red Bull for all. A short video of the AIR team was shown, narrated by Kevin Lynch. After that, a demo was down connecting the Wii remote with Flash, pretty cool stuff. After that, two copies of Flex Builder were given away, one version 2 with charting and the other version 3 Professional, many t-shirts (apparently Steve will be giving these away forever), and bunch of the eBoy AIR Launch Posters, of which I won one. Now the question is where to put it in the house

Anyways, thanks to all who made last night possible and I look forward to future meetings of the Flash, Flex, and ColdFusion user groups in Philly and some more cross group networking events!

It looks like Steve has lined up some meetings for the Philly CFUG for the rest of the year. The presentations and organization are spearheaded by Terrence Ryan. Terry, I'm guessing you emailed Steve (or got caught online) and asked when our next meeting, and thus, volunteered yourself. Anyways, I hope to see all the CF developers in the Philly area at these meetings.

Philly CFUG Scorpio Review

Over 40 people attended the ColdFusion 8 Road Show with Adam Lehman and Tim Buntel stop at the Philly CFUG yesterday, held at the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School. Before getting into highlights of the meeting, the facilities at Wharton are absolutely top notch. The lecture hall was nice and roomy, no standing room only as has happened at past meetings of the group (which is a good thing, though). Second, I've never seen presenters able to just walk up, hook their laptop up and get running with the projector quicker. So a big thank you to the team at Wharton for letting the group use the facilities. Anyways, the meeting lasted about 3 hours and there was plenty of features shown as well as questions from the audience that helped to explain some of the features shown in more detail. I don't believe anything shown yesterday was a new feature, except the mention of the <CFDBINFO> tag which I believe was shown the day before as I saw a mention of it on CF-Talk. The presentation was broken down into 3 different areas: Development, Integration, and Server Management. I really liked the breakdown as it gave a good flow to the presentation and lent itself to natural break points (so we could all grab more pizza and soda so Steve didn't have to take 15 pies home). ColdFusion Meeting : DataMgr Review

Yesterday, Steve Bryant gave a presentation to the ColdFusion Meetup group on DataMgr. I was looking forward to this presentation based on the feedback I had seen across the web on from the various user groups Steve has presented to. I will say this much, I wasn't disappointed at all. DataMgr is a lightweight database abstraction tool and supports both QuerySim/Prototyping and Active Schema. DataMgr is different from other database abstraction tools like Reactor and Transfer in that it doesn't generate components or files, as far as I could tell. The initial table schemas/setup/configuration is driven off of XML, but this could be in a file loaded at run time or in some piece of logic accessed by your application. Also, DataMagr deals with structures as input arguments, where the keys match the columns in the database, making calling the various functions in its API fairly straightforward and simple. This is definitely one technology I'll be checking out as I think it could be the missing link in a project I'm working on that requires per customer configurations of a generic application based off of a common database model. I think DataMgr can be used as the data access component and the XML used for it, could also be used in the configuration modules as well. Overall, it was a good presentation and Steve has plenty of documentation, videos, and past presentations at his site that getting up to speed on DataMgr should be pretty easy.
