Adventures in Web Application Develompent by Phil Duba - AIR

This blog covers my adventures in web application development centering on Adobe's ColdFusion and Flex technologies with tangents into Adobe AIR, ASP.NET, PHP and Java. My goal as a web developer is to try and understand the aforementioned web-related technologies to a level in which I can build a fully functional system. This blog will track my progress, show the things I have learned, and what I may be currently working on.

A Good Night!

Last night, the 3 local Philly user groups threw a release party for Flex 3 and AIR 1.0. A big thanks to the guys at Independence Hall for hosting the event. IndyHall is a coworking organization that rents space in a building in Old City to those work work from home, telecommute or just want to get out of the stuff office.

The event itself was a good networking event with pizza, soda, and Red Bull for all. A short video of the AIR team was shown, narrated by Kevin Lynch. After that, a demo was down connecting the Wii remote with Flash, pretty cool stuff. After that, two copies of Flex Builder were given away, one version 2 with charting and the other version 3 Professional, many t-shirts (apparently Steve will be giving these away forever), and bunch of the eBoy AIR Launch Posters, of which I won one. Now the question is where to put it in the house

Anyways, thanks to all who made last night possible and I look forward to future meetings of the Flash, Flex, and ColdFusion user groups in Philly and some more cross group networking events!

I love Google Analytics AIR Suite

For the past couple of weeks, I have been using the Google Analytics Reporting AIR Application authored by Nicolas Lierman for this site. While I don't get a great deal of traffic for this site, I always like looking at the stats Google provides, especially that map/location of visitors and browser/OS versions. I used some of this information when reskinning the site. I like the AIR application because it lets me get to all the information without going through the clunky interface that Google has. I also like the fact I can add in more profiles and switch relatively easily between them. Most importantly, though, the AIR application has provided me with a sense of what can be done with an AIR application and how, I think, the main value of these types of application is the dissemination of information across a business quickly and easily, very much like the web-based portal.

onAIR Bus Tour - Philly

The onAIR Bust Tour's stop in Philly was awesome. The Franklin Institute was a great venue. The meet 'n greet was in the Planetarium and the shows were in the science theater. As a nice bonus, Adobe had surge protectors everywhere so I could plug in may laptop after my 45 minute battery was drained. The sessions were jam packed and everything was top notch from the food to the games to the drinks to the presentations to the great giveaways. A big thank you to Rob Hall, the esteemed leader of the Philly Flash Platform Adobe User Group for pushing for the stop here in Philly and doing a great job organizing the turnout by pushing people to be there. I came away very excited to start diving into AIR applications. As Steve Ritter said over on the Philly CFUG site, the stop could have been a full day. Makes me want to maybe hit up New York for their full-day. Overall, a great show with lots of information passed out that has definitely stoked my interest in AIR.

AIR HTML-based App

Ok, the Flex one was pretty easy, but using Dreamweaver's extension for making a site an Adobe AIR Application made things way too easy. It literally took me two-clicks to convert my site to an AIR app. Not sure about the whole site usage, but I'm guessing that's about the only way to get Dreamweaver to recognize what it needs to package. I'm starting to get all excited about AIR. I think I have an idea for an app that will help me learn all the new features of ColdFusion 8, Flex, AJAX, and then, finally, AIR.

Thanks to Mike Chambers' presentation, I am following along as he is doing the presentation at the Philly stop. I know it isn't much, but hey, it's the first time I've delved into this. Now on to the HTML/JavaScript one.
